Welcome to Darkinjung Country-Whale Dreaming
Darkinjung (People of the Sea)
The whale is the spiritual totem of Darkinjung Country; which borders
extend from the Hawkesberry River to the South, to Lake McQuarie in the
North and Wollombi. To the West.
The Darkinjung people have been here for over 25000 years. The clan
groups are the Narara, Erina,WoyWoy, Patonga, Wyong, Kulnura, Tuggerah
and Wolombi. The dialect was Darkinjung. They were hunters and
gatherers of their land. Ceremonies of importance were conducted at
Ourimbah.
The Darkinjung peoples' lives were dictated by the seasons and the
seasonal travels throughout their lands from the Mountains during
winter to the lakes, wetlands and beaches in summer. Evidence of shell
midens along the dunes and bays of the Brisbane Waters and inlets can
still be seen today.
Darkinjung customs and beliefs are etched into the sandstone on the
surrounding ridgelines. There are well over 7000 rock carvings and over
3000 rock art sites. This makes Darkinjung Country one of the most
extensive rock art sites areas in the world.
The Darkinjung believe in the Creator Baiyami (God). They have
totemship with the land and all its creatures including the Sky World
and the Sea. This is where the Dreamtime stories come from. Mt Yango,
Wollombi, is their most sacred site - it is where the Great Spirit
Baiyami descended from the sky world at the time of creation.
Darkinjung tribal neighbors include Garrigal of the Northern Beachs in
Sydney, the Darrug of Western Sydney, Awabakal of Newcastle, the
Wiradjuri to the west of the Blue Mountains and the Gomilaroi to the
North West.
